Director of Student Support
Murrietta Valley Unified School District
Butch Owens served as a principal in the Murrieta Valley Unified School District at the elementary, middle school, and alternative education level. He helped plan the district's second comprehensive high school, Vista Murrieta High School, and served as its first principal. Currently, he serves the district as Director of Student Support. His regular education teaching experiences include elementary and middle school grades in both public and private education. He spent eight years as a Special Education RSP teacher at all levels, K-12. Prior to becoming an elementary principal, he completed his counseling credential and worked as a counselor/Assistant Principal in a K-8 school.
Butch's creative energy has fueled the spread of technology at many levels in the district. As administrator of alternative education, he expanded the use of technology into classes such as digital photography for high school students. At Avaxat Elementary School he developed a team of students to produce a live weekly news program that was broadcast to all of the classrooms throughout the campus. Throughout the week, students would conduct interviews with community members, teachers and other students. These interviews would then be incorporated into the live newscast. He worked closely with the district technology department to install a technology lab that is shared with all of the alternative education programs and gets used up to 12 hours daily. The district's first independent study program for both high school and elementary students was implemented under his leadership.
Butch is a trained facilitator for the Franklin/Covey 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, What Matters Most Time Management and 4 Roles of Leadership. He has severed as a trainer for both the Murrieta Valley USD and the Riverside County Office of Education.
Butch's hobbies include music and photography. Outside of the school day you can usually find him at school events taking photos or announcing local high school football and basketball games for the local radio station.
One of Butch's accomplishments outside of teaching involves building his own home as owner builder 14 years ago. During this time he lived in an eighteen foot travel trailer with his wife, Cathy and their four children, Sarah, Erin, Josh and Matt on the construction site. Needless to say, they haven't taken a family camping trip since then and none are planned for the future!
