South Central Service Co-Op
A former teacher, principal, assistant superintendent, and teacher center coordinator/assistant director, Marsha is now director of her education service cooperative. She also has administered federal programs, worked with schools on curriculum and instruction, and led principals and other administrators through numerous technology trainings.
Although she originally planned to earn a degree in secretarial science, Marsha changed her course and completed a BSE in business education and English at Southern Arkansas University. Her first technology experience occurred in 1975, when she found herself key punching cards for an IBM mainframe in an introduction to computers class at SAU! Since that time, her experiences have broadened to include acting as an Arkansas Gates Grant trainer and providing professional development in applications such as FrontPage and Excel. Marsha believes that the possibilities for instructional technology are limitless—contained only by school leadership and by the teacher's vision.
One of Marsha's most satisfying accomplishments in technology is the development of the SCSC Co-Op Web page. This resource for teachers includes approximately 400 lessons plans that are directly correlated to Arkansas' Curriculum Frameworks. Teachers will also find nearly 50 WebQuests for direct use with students. She is also proud of her involvement with a Goals 2000 Technology Literacy Challenge Grant in which teachers received digital cameras as a result of completing a graduate class partnered by SCSC and SAU.
Marsha's main misgiving about technology is schools' ongoing ability to fund these initiatives. She also believes that education leaders sometimes fall short by not modeling the integration of technology.
Marsha is an avid horseback rider, and she and her husband travel extensively with their grandchildren. They have one son, Trent, who is married and has a son and daughter three years apart. Marsha is quite proud to say that her son completed his law degree in May 2005, and is currently the deputy city attorney for the city of Hot Springs.
