No, she wasn't a truck driver. But trucks did play a role in Christine Carter's initiation to technology. During a break in her teaching career, Christine worked for Ryder Trucks and operated a huge computer to create the billing for the company. Later, in 1990, she convinced her school's PTA to purchase a computer for her and became the first "computer-using principal" in her district. Currently, Chris is leading the effort to bring one-to-one computing to the students in her district.
Chris got her start in education during a high school recreation class. It afforded her the opportunity to "teach" in both a high school and elementary school classroom. "I enjoyed the elementary experience so much," says Chris, "I decided to become a teacher myself."
In Chris' view, technology holds unlimited possibilities for education. "The future holds so many new experiences yet not discovered. Currently, I believe student achievement can be improved through technology whether through innovative and interactive software, internet application or teacher application. The world of technology is our young people's world and it is imperative that educators take advantage of this wonderful tool to support learning."
What stands in the way realizing this potential? "Only our inability to grasp it!" says Chris. "As educators we should be in the forefront of demanding that technology be available for all students in every classroom."
Unlike some of the leaders we've profiled, Chris has no misgivings about technology. A pragmatist, she states flatly, "It is here to stay. We need to be proactive in making sure that our teachers are given the training to use technology effectively in classrooms as well as personally."
Outside of school, Chris enjoys a satisfying family life. "I am married to a wonderful man, Bob Carter, who is my inspiration. We have four children and five grandchildren, a dog Sophie and a cat, Mollie. Most recently we purchased two weeks of timeshare on Poipu Beach on Kauai, so we look forward to spending many wonderful holidays with our family in Hawaii."
Chris enjoys reading, both for pleasure and for learning. Next to her family, cooking is her second love, and
traveling is her "passion."
